Busiswa says upcoming album will describe how she survived two abusive relationships

Over the years, more celebrities have been coming out to talk about the abuse they have suffered. The latest one is singer and songwriter Busiswa Gqulu, who has opened up about being in abusive relationships.

In a series of videos shared on her Instagram account, the “SBWL” hitmaker spoke about how she suffered physical, emotional, psychological, and financial abuse for six years from her two former lovers, including the father of her baby, Katlego “DJ Kaygee” Mlangeni.

“In years between 2013 and 2019 I was in, not one but two abusive relationships. The first was with Sifiso Mazibuko who abused me physically, psychologically, and emotionally. The second was with Katlego Mlangeni, who is the father of my child. He abused me physically, emotionally, financially, not only while we were in a relationship, but he also came after me four months after our break up to beat me up once again for seeing me out with someone else,” she said.

In September 2019, the singer and her friend, Marc, real name Themba Kubheka, were allegedly attacked by Mlangeni. Kubheka broke his silence about the violent incident on social media. However, Mlangeni later denied the assault but says he found the two in a compromising position.

Busiswa says those who are in an abusive relationship should never think they can change an abuser. “I tried different things during the relationship. From therapy, anger management classes to the elders and prayer. I really thought that abuse is something you can get through with your partner,” she said.

“I’m here to say to ladies who are in abusive relationships or who’ll ever come across that situation, God forbid. You can’t. It’s not your place, it’s not your responsibility, it’s not your job to change an abuser.” She went on to detail how she lived in fear, but eventually got the strength to get out of the relationships and survive.

Busiswa said going forward her story will be told in her music and only her music. She says her new album, which she has finished working on and has submitted for mastering, will detail more about her personal life and how she survived.

“My music is going to tell my story right now, hence the album,” Busiswa said.
