Cardi B has owned 2020 without a doubt because the queen stays winning and securing the bag. Bardi won the honorary award at the Billboard Women in Music event on the 10th of December.
The award was presented to the Cardi by Tamika Palmer, mother of the late Breonna Taylor. Taylor, a black medical worker, was shot and killed by police officers in Louisville, Kentucky, in March during a botched raid on her apartment. The incident led to wide-scale demonstrations in the US over several months.
This year marked the 15th annual Billboard Women in Music event and it was hosted by US musician Teyana Taylor and, due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, was held virtually via livestream.
Cardi B won the main award of the night, Woman of the Year, which in previous years has been won by leading women in the music industry such as Beyonce, Fergie, Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande and Billie Eilish, and she is the first female rapper to win this award.
The Bodak Yellow hitmaker was honoured for her political activism around the #BlackLivesMatter movement and specific involvement in the fight for justice for the late Breonna Taylor. “One of Breonna’s most outspoken advocates for justice over the last nine months has been Cardi B,” Palmer said. “From the start Cardi has used her platform to spread the truth about what happened to Breonna and to reaffirm that black women’s lives matter.”
