Celebrating Jazz Heritage and Inspiring Young Artists

The Standard Bank Joy of Jazz festival proudly presents Jazz for Young People, a dynamic concert event dedicated to celebrating young jazz lovers and raising crucial funds for the National School of Arts (NSA). The festival will take place on July 26, from 09:00 to 18:00, at the NSA in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

This exciting event, designed by young people for young people, promises world-class entertainment alongside opportunities for emerging young entrepreneurs and artists to access new markets and build connections.

Adding to the excitement, NSA alumni and award-winning singer-songwriter Zoe Modiga will lead a special roadshow visiting schools featured in the lineup. Through mentoring sessions, Zoe will help students refine their performances, ensuring they shine brightly on the big day. This initiative aims to inspire and empower the next generation of jazz performers.

The lineup boasts standout acts like the sibling trio Biko’s Manna and the crossover jazz ensemble Iphupho L’ka Biko, alongside breakout performances from local school bands. Other participating groups include Khutlo Tharo Jazz Band, Sibikwa Marimba Band, East Rand School of the Arts, Morris Isaacson School of the Arts, Parktown Girls Marimba Band, Springs Boys High School, Tshwane School of Music, and Willow Crescent Magnet School of Music Band. TheRealDJ Zandy will headline the day as the event’s selector.

Beyond the music, families can enjoy a dedicated kids’ zone with inflatables and games, while art lovers will be treated to an exhibition showcasing jazz-inspired artworks by NSA students. Food stalls offering a variety of delicious eats will keep everyone fueled throughout the day.

Jazz for Young People is a wonderful opportunity to bring families and communities together through the universal language of music,” says Mantwa Chinoamadi, Festival Producer and CEO at T-Musicman. “We are elated to create a vibrant, family-friendly atmosphere where young people can enjoy incredible jazz performances and be inspired by the creativity and energy of this timeless art form. Our goal is to celebrate the rich heritage of jazz while nurturing the next generation of artists and fans.”

This event also serves as a vital fundraiser to support the National School of Arts, empowering young artists and sustaining arts education in South Africa.

Jazz for Young People invites everyone — young and old, parents, educators, and jazz fans alike — to join in celebrating the future of jazz and arts in South Africa.
