Hello Uncle T, I am a 38-year-old man living in Soshanguve with my wife and three kids and I need help. I own a very large piece of property that I rent-out to people looking for a place to stay. Currently, I have 5 tenants occupying the seven rooms that I own and amongst these tenants, there is this one guy whom I feel sorry for. This guy works night-shifts and while he is at work, his unemployed girlfriend does despicable things that no normal human being can do.
The girlfriend goes out every weekend with different guys who drive flashy cars and wear special designer clothing while my tenant works hard just to please this loose girl and her mother. I know it’s wrong to stick my nose in other people’s business, but I cannot tolerate seeing this girl come back to this guy drunk and causing a scene in my yard. For months now, I have witnessed the girl pick up a fight with my tenant and when he says hurtful things, she then calls her mother to come and gang on the guy.
I remember this other time my wife called me from the mall to come and stop the girlfriend and the mother from beating my tenant with a steel rod. When I got there, the guy was bleeding with his mouth and nose and pleading for mercy from the girlfriend and the mother. I tried to talk him out of the relationship but after a few days, they kiss and make up and I seem as a bad person to them. That is why I am writing to you Uncle T, how do I crack this one? Hello Anonymous and thank you for bringing such a disturbing case to my attention, victims of abuse never realize that they are victims until they land in hospital or worse. As a property owner, I feel as if you are not aware of the role you’re supposed to play within the yard. A landlord should set rules for tenants, rules that bind them to respect not only your presence, but other tenants as well. Always keep in mind that if it happens that the duo murder this guy, the first to be questioned by the law is you, how does such thing happen right under your nose?
At this moment and stage, the best thing you can do for the guy is to give him two options; either he leaves the room with his girlfriend because his situation is dragging your name in the mud as a property owner to other tenants. Alternatively, he gets to keep the room on a condition that his girlfriend never sets foot within the yard anymore.
Trust me, this will save you a lot of trouble in terms of always having to worry about the noise and the fights coming from this couple. I’m not saying don’t be human, but all I am saying is; we sometimes have to avoid helping certain people not because we don’t want to, but because the universe tends to unfold on its own.
