LISTEN: Samthing Soweto Drops Second Album, Touch Is a Move

After years of quiet reflection and anticipation, Samthing Soweto is back with his long-awaited second studio album, Touch Is a Move: Good Morning — a body of work that is both a sonic homecoming and a deeply personal diary.

The album’s title blends two philosophies that reflect the artist’s life over the past few years. “Touch Is a Move,” inspired by a childhood game rule — once you touch, you move — speaks to decisiveness, courage, and living with intention. “Good Morning” began as a daily online greeting in 2023, a digital ritual that helped Samkelo Lelethu Mdolomba (his real name) stay connected to his fans during quieter seasons. Together, they set the tone for an album that meditates on small gestures, intimate connections, and the moments that shape us.

Narratively, Touch Is a Move: Good Morning unfolds like a single day in early-90s Soweto, told through the eyes of a five-year-old Samkelo. The album moves from morning to night, introducing us to family members — uMama, uGogo, bhut’ Lungisa, sis’ Amina, and sis’ BhiBhi — all through a child’s perspective. Though Samthing Soweto is the third of four siblings in real life, here he reclaims his younger self as “iqanda lakubo” — the last-born — to explore belonging, memory, and the magic of intergenerational life.

The project is stitched together with interludes that evoke daily rituals, overheard conversations, and private thoughts. It feels more like a film soundtrack than a traditional album — yet remains unmistakably musical.

The final interlude, “GoodNight,” closes the album with a prayer led by uGogo. Young Samkelo drifts into sleep, reflecting on his day and longing for connection. The album ends as softly as it began — with intimacy, warmth, and deep emotional resonance.

With Touch Is a Move: Good Morning, he invites listeners into his world — one day, one song, one memory at a time.
