Percy Tau warmed the bench as Brighton and Hove Albion secured a shock 1-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday night.
The Reds were without goalkeeper Alisson Becker through illness as Caoimhin Kelleher came while new signing Ben Davies was named on the bench. Brighton, meanwhile, left Tau and former Reds midfielder Adam Lallana on the bench as they looked to cause another upset after Sunday’s win over Tottenham Hotspur.
The Reds dominated possession in the early stages but were let down by their finishing, as Mohamed Salah squandered and Xherdan Shaqiri squandered good chances in the opening 15 minutes.
Brighton had their first golden opening 10 minutes later when a clearance fell kindly into the path of Dan Burn, who sent his effort over the crossbar from close range.
The hosts nearly found themselves behind just before the break when Pascal Gross sent a hopeful cross into the box, but an un-marked Neil Maupay sent his header over the target.
Brighton got their reward 10 minutes into the second half when Burn’s knockdown found Steven Alzate who sent a first-time finish into the back of the net from six-yards out.
Jurgen Klopp responded with a double change soon after, with Shaqiri and Georginio Wijnaldum making way for Divock Origi and Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain.
Kelleher continued to keep the Reds in the game in the second half as he provided some stunning saves to keep out Gross and Leandro Trossard in the final 15 minutes.
Jurgen Klopp’s charges, meanwhile, were unable to claw themselves back into the clash as they suffer a second successive loss in the league at home ahead of Sunday’s clash against Manchester City.
