Photos: All the looks from the 2021 Met Gala Red Carpet

Billie Eilish went full glam in a huge peach ball gown at the pandemic-delayed Met Gala on Monday night, while fellow host of the evening Amanda Gorman was breathtaking in cobalt blue custom Vera Wang with a diamond laurel wreath in her hair.

Rihanna, ever the Met Gala queen, showed up late in a huge black Balenciaga look and hat accompanied by A$ap Rocky in a multicolored quilted coat from ERL. She wore over 267 carats of Bulgari diamonds, including two choker necklaces.

The 2021 Met Gala gave the world the dose of stylish magic that it needed and there was plenty of drama on the red carpet.

There were many brilliant fashion moments and just as many head-scratching ones with many eventful moments on the night as well.

Twitter is fully abuzz with standout happenings from fashion’s biggest night and we’ve taken a look at some of the real highlights.

Kendall and Kim’s red carpet run-in

Kendall Jenner’s reaction to her sister Kim Kardashian’s ensemble will go down in history. Confused, amused… wondering if that was actually Kim.

While the supermodel had one of the most beautiful ensembles on the night wearing a completely sheer Givenchy dress, Kim’s head-to-toe cover-up by Balenciaga drew some unflattering comparisons with a dementor from Harry Potter.

Cara’s dig at the patriarchy

It wouldn’t be a true red carpet without a political statement being made and there were a number of A-listers who made their feelings known sartorially.

British model-turned-actress Cara Delevingne wore an all-white ensemble including a bullet proof vest with the raunchy message: ‘Peg the Patriarchy’ in reference to a sexual move.

Speaking with press on the night, the Life in a Year star addressed the cheeky message by saying: ‘If someone doesn’t know what this means, you’re going to have to look it up. It’s about women empowerment, gender equality.’ She concluded: ‘It’s all about sticking it to the man.’

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s tone-deaf statement

Likewise, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez used the Met Gala runway as a platform with a statement-making dress that drove a powerful political message.

For her debut appearance at the iconic festival, the American politician wore a white off-the-shoulder gown by Brother Vellies with a tulle fishtail train which was with the statement ‘Tax the Rich’ written across the back. She even carried a ladylike top handle bag in red which proudly sent the same message.

The stark message has been met with a mixed response with one person branding it ‘iconic’ on Twitter, while others branded it hypocritical.

‘“Tax the rich” says AOC’s dress … at the Met Gala … where tickets cost $30,000,’ queried one red carpet watcher.

Dan Levy made a powerful statement for the LGBTQIA+ community with his irreverent red carpet look.

The Schitt’s Creek star and co-creator collaborated with Loewe’s Jonathan Anderson and Cartier to fashion his striking one-piece with dramatic puff sleeves and a symbol of two queer men kissing.

The fashion designer drew inspiration from the American painter and AIDS activist David Wojnarowicz whose work highlighted the systemic oppression for the standout style moment.

Rihanna and her beau arriving seriously fashionably late

There were countless loved-up couples on the night, but Rihanna and her beau rapper ASAP Rocky ruled the red carpet wearing what were effectively quilts.

They were the last on the red carpet and gave no explanation as to why they were so late. Perhaps they slept it out?

Bennifer’s masked kiss

Will we ever have enough of JLo and Ben Affleck’s PDAs? The short answer is no.

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez made their glorious return to the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival and just like that night they couldn’t keep their hands off each other.

They were even snapped locking lips with their masks. Some love knows no boundaries…

American gymnast Nia Dennis started the event off with a real bang as she turned the Met Gala steps into her own floor mat.

She wowed as she did the splits, flips and twists as the band played Bruno Mars’ Uptown Funk, in a Stella McCartney unitard no less.

Viral performances are not a new occurrence for the talented athlete, her previous performances to songs by Missy Elliot and Beyoncé have gone the same way.

Simone Biles deserved a gold medal for wearing a 88lbs dress

Undoubtedly, one of the stars to make the biggest splash on the Met Gala red carpet was Olympic champ Simone Biles.

The American athlete took to the red carpet in a unique and dramatic gown by AREA x Athleta gown which included a 88lb Swarovski crystal-encrusted skirt with a starry sky body suit underneath.

The train was so heavy and delicate at the same time that it need an entourage of six men to help her navigate the red carpet.

The talked-about moment that didn’t actually happen

Once again American singer-songwriter Jason Derulo is trending on Twitter following the glitzy night but contrary to countless tweets, he did not fall down the famed steps at the event.

The running joke about the Take You Dancing singer kicked off at the 2015 Met Gala and it seems it has reared its head again, except he never took a tumble down the steps in the first place…

The picture that is commonly shared is of one poor man who looks a bit like Jason tripping at the Cannes Film Festival in 2011.

Take a look through some of the standout style from the night in the gallery below.
