Trust The Weeknd (not that we are surprised) to turn any event into his own with his bold fashion statements.
The pop star rocked red during the Super Bowl halftime show.
His custom Givenchy look — which paralleled several red-and-black suits worn recently by the star — featured a red crystal-encrusted jacket worn over a black cotton poplin shirt and wool trousers. A black leather tie and gloves, plus black-and-white derbies, completed the outfit.
While The Weeknd’s face didn’t appear altered for the halftime show — as it has over the past year or so — several dancers with bandaged faces and similar red-and-black suits surrounded the star at various points during the performance.
The singer has made headlines for stepping out with his face bloodied and bandaged or altered with prosthetics and CGI plastic surgery — part of “The Character” he created surrounding his album “After Hours.”
He’s also worn a whole lot of red-and-black suits. The 30-year-old, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, sported his signature style while performing and attending events with a banged-up face, including at the 2020 VMAs, which saw him with bruises, and the 2020 American Music Awards, where his face was completely wrapped up in bandages.
“The significance of the entire head bandages is reflecting on the absurd culture of Hollywood celebrity and people manipulating themselves for superficial reasons to please and be validated,” he previously told Variety.
Givenchy Creative Director Matthew M. Williams said the singer’s halftime look was a reflection of his “unique personality.”
“To me, fashion is all about infusing what you wear with a unique personality, and The Weeknd brought his look to life with his energy, character and sense of style,” Williams said in a statement.
The Weeknd’s halftime show mostly took place in the stands, instead of on the field, to abide by COVID-19 safety precautions.
