Rue doesn’t look so euphoric in the trailer for the Christmas special episode of HBO’s Euphoria, which will air between the show’s seasons.
At the end of the first season of the HBO drama, Rue and Jules (Hunter Schafer) were planning to run away together until Rue changed her mind and Jules went without her. Now, Rue’s sitting alone in a diner replaying that goodbye, and she called her sponsor Ali (Colman Domingo) to help her out.
But of course, the most exciting part of the trailer is where it says, “Emmy Award Winner Zendaya.” That’s never gonna get old! The first look at “Part 1: Rue” shows Zendaya in the direct aftermath of the season-one finale, swaddled in her dad’s hoodie in a diner at night, looking every bit like a Gen-Z Edward Hopper painting. Rue seems to reflect on how things were left with Jules on the train platform, flashing back to glimpses of the finale.
Maybe I deserve it, she thinks in voice-over as she stares sadly into the distance over an un-sipped glass of orange juice. Her sponsor Ali (Colman Domingo) slides into the booth to interrupt her sulk, asking, “Why’d you call me?” “Part 1” of the two-part Very Special Episode premieres on HBO and HBO Max on December 6 at 9 p.m. It’ll be the anti-Christmas special you’ve been waiting for.
The special episode is one of two “bridge” episodes, as Zendaya called them during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, that were filmed during the pandemic and serve as a little treat for fans before season two gets underway in 2021.
Zendaya, of course, has had a lot to celebrate in the year since Euphoria’s season one finale aired. The 24-year-old actress won an Emmy for her starring role at the 2020 ceremony and became the youngest ever winner in the category for Lead Actress in a Drama.
