The Journalist Brings Afro Tech to Life with Shimza in New DJ Mix Series

DJ, producer, and acclaimed dance music journalist Andile Mathobela—widely known as The Journalist—has unveiled an ambitious new DJ mix series that fuses immersive Afro Tech beats with the rich storytelling of his signature artist interviews. This cutting-edge project stems from his influential online platform, TheJournalistDJ.Com, a go-to destination for in-depth coverage of South Africa’s dynamic dance music scene.

The first instalment in the series is a powerful sonic tribute to Afro Tech trailblazer DJ Shimza. Titled The Journalist – SHIMZA INTERVIEW, the mix artfully weaves together emotive soundscapes with select audio excerpts from their in-depth conversation. In the interview, Shimza opens up about the international rise of Afro Tech, the evolution of his pioneering label KUNYE, and the cultural impact of his standout events like U’R and KUNYE Live. He also reflects on his global ambitions and the strategic mindset behind his growing international presence.

“This mix is not just a playlist—it’s a sonic documentary,” says The Journalist. “Shimza didn’t just talk about music, he outlined a movement. I wanted to translate that energy into a listening experience that’s immersive, story-driven, and unmistakably Afro Tech.”
