UCT Students | ‘Uyinene Mrwetyana was a light to us’

After the news of the tragic passing of UCT student, Uyinene Mrwetyana on Monday, friends and students gathered for a vigil to honour her.

At the vigil, Uyinene’s friends spoke out and thanked everyone for their continued support through the painful ordeal. They then paid a tribute to the fallen young soul.

“Uyinene was a light to us all. She was such a wholesome person and supportive friend.”

Many of the speakers at the vigil raised concerns about fearing for their safety on campus. One speaker went as far as to say that there is a war against women.

Messages of support were also shared from Rhodes University and Wits University, while elsewhere in the Cape, a night vigil was also held at Stellenbosch University.

The man accused of her murder allegedly confessed to beating her to death with a scale and then burying her body. He works at the Post Office in Claremont and lured Uyinene back after-hours under false pretenses.
