Winter has officially arrived in the Maloti Mountains and one of Africa’s most unique winter experiences is back! Afriski Mountain Resort in Lesotho officially opened its 2026 winter season on 12 June, welcoming skiers, snowboarders, and snow lovers back to the slopes.
Located high in the mountains at an altitude of 3,222 metres, Afriski is one of Africa’s top snow sport destinations. Although the area naturally receives snowfall, the resort uses an advanced snowmaking system to ensure visitors have a quality snow experience throughout the short winter season, which runs until the end of August. Whether you are an experienced skier or trying snow sports for the first time, Afriski has something for everyone. The resort offers a one-kilometre main slope for experienced riders, beginner areas, and a ski school with two-hour lessons to help newcomers learn the basics.
For those looking for more adventure, the terrain park gives snowboarders and skiers a chance to test their skills with jumps and rails. Visitors can also enjoy fun activities like tubing and bumboarding for a more relaxed way to experience the snow. Beyond skiing, Afriski has become known for its mountain lifestyle and entertainment experiences. One of the biggest highlights of the season is Winterfest 2026, taking place on 22 August. Known as “Africa’s Coolest Weekend,” the event combines snow activities with live music and après-ski parties.
This year’s festival lineup includes South African electronic music group The Kiffness, along with DJs Slayer and PDV. To keep the event exclusive, tickets are limited to only 300 guests. The resort will also host the IISA South Africa Ice Swimming Championships from 31 July to 2 August, bringing extreme cold-water swimmers to Lesotho for a unique winter challenge.
