South Africa’s national team Bafana Bafana, created history in Mexico after securing a famous 1-0 victory over South Korea at the Monterrey Stadium. The win saw Hugo Broos’ team qualify for the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup for the first time ever.
The achievement came after a difficult start to the tournament. Bafana Bafana had earned only one point from their first two matches, including a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Mexico. Going into the final group game, South Africa knew they had no choice but to win, while South Korea only needed a draw to qualify.
South Korea started strongly and nearly took the lead just two minutes into the match. A dangerous corner from Lee Kang-in found Kim Min-jae, whose powerful header looked certain to go in. However, Aubrey Modiba made a brilliant goal-line clearance to keep South Africa alive.
After surviving the early pressure, Bafana Bafana grew into the game. Relebohile Mofokeng controlled the midfield and helped create attacking opportunities. Thalente Mbatha came close with a long-range shot that forced a good save from Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu, while Evidence Makgopa missed the rebound as the teams went into halftime level. South Korea brought on star player Son Heung-min at the start of the second half, hoping he could change the game. However, South Africa remained disciplined and continued to look dangerous on the attack.
The breakthrough finally came in the 63rd minute. Substitute Tshepang Moremi made an immediate impact, beating his defender on the wing before delivering a perfect cross to Thapelo Maseko. The Mamelodi Sundowns forward showed great composure, cutting inside before firing a low shot into the bottom corner to give Bafana Bafana a historic lead. The final minutes were filled with pressure as South Korea pushed forward searching for an equaliser. Son Heung-min came close with a late long-range effort, but South Africa’s defence stood strong.
Ronwen Williams led from the front, while Mbekezeli Mbokazi delivered a brilliant performance to help keep Korea out. After six minutes of stoppage time, the final whistle confirmed a famous 1-0 victory.
