South African actor Khaya Dladla has opened up about the career decisions he made after leaving the hit television drama Uzalo, revealing that he turned down acting offers from three major television channels to avoid being typecast.
The actor, who became a household name for his popular character GC on Uzalo, said he was flooded with acting opportunities after leaving the show. However, many of the roles being offered were similar to the character audiences already knew him for.
Dladla explained that he feared accepting those roles would limit his career.
“After Uzalo, I think I received a call from three different channels offering me a character similar to GC,” he said.
According to Dladla, he had to make a difficult choice between accepting the financial opportunities in front of him and protecting his future as an actor.
“My mind was like, if I accept this, this will be all I’ll do for the rest of my life.”
He ultimately turned down the offers, repeatedly telling the channels, “No, thank you,” because he wanted a role that would challenge him creatively.

Dladla said he does not want to be defined by one character. Instead, he sees himself as a versatile actor who should be able to take on different personalities and styles.
“I needed something completely out of it,” he explained, highlighting his desire to play characters that would push him outside his comfort zone.
His decision eventually paid off when he landed a role in the acclaimed drama series eHostela. The character gave him the opportunity to showcase a different side of his acting abilities and required him to make noticeable changes to his voice, body language and overall performance.
For Dladla, eHostela proved that sometimes taking a step back from the spotlight can be an important part of moving forward.
While turning down multiple acting opportunities came with financial pressure, the actor believes protecting his creative identity was worth the risk. His experience is a reminder that saying “no” to the right opportunity can sometimes lead to something even bigger.
