Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit has officially received FIA approval to upgrade to Grade 1 status, paving the way for Formula 1’s long-awaited return to Africa. Originally built in 1961, Kyalami has become Southern Africa’s premier motorsport venue, hosting 21 Formula 1 Grand Prix races and gaining international acclaim.
The current 4.522km layout, which was upgraded to Grade 2 in 2016, will undergo further improvements, including enhanced safety features such as run-off areas, barriers, and drainage systems. Importantly, the layout will remain unchanged, with the focus on meeting modern Grade 1 standards.
At a press conference, Kyalami Circuit owner Toby Venter and Clive Bowen from Apex Circuit Design revealed that the upgrade is the result of five years of planning. Bowen, who also worked on the Miami F1 circuit, emphasised that the improvements would bring Kyalami in line with global standards, while keeping its essence intact.

The Grade 1 upgrade, set to be completed within three years, will ensure Kyalami stands as Africa’s only FIA Grade 1 circuit—ready to host F1 once again. As Venter concluded, “We’re ready for Formula 1’s return to African soil. This is just the beginning for Kyalami.”
