Rapper ZULO is back with Z, a three-track EP that encapsulates his evolution into a refined and bold sound. Compact yet powerful, the project blends faith, emotion, and cultural pride, marking a significant step in ZULO’s artistic journey. With each track, he demonstrates his growth, embracing a distinctly South African sound that’s both daring and soulful.

The lead single, “Sweeter Success,” accompanies the EP’s release, and it delivers an afrobeats-inspired groove driven by a nostalgic sample from UPZ’s iconic “Pure Surprise.” Beneath the joyful rhythm, however, lies a more somber message—an exploration of the emotional toll that ambition can take, and the cost of always striving for more.

ZULO not only produced the track himself, but was also joined by Miglow and SpiceDrums for additional production. The outcome is a sonic contradiction—both triumphant and tense, joyful yet weary.

“It’s a cheat code, really,” ZULO reflects on the timeless sample. “The fact that you can go to every event in the country and the DJ always drops Pure Surprise, that’s culture. I needed that feeling. I needed them to feel a memory when listening to this song.”

Each track on Z brings a different facet of ZULO’s artistry to life. The EP opens with “God’s Armour,” a powerful, gospel-infused anthem that fuses brass and trap drums. Bold and unflinching, it sets the tone for the rest of the project—a spiritual protest that blends faith with resilience. The final track, “Spaan,” takes a gritty turn, confronting issues like addiction, poverty, and the long-lasting effects of apartheid, all through the lens of coloured identity.

But Z is more than just a collection of songs; it’s a statement. A declaration of ownership, legacy, and personal evolution. The chrome “Z” emblem that adorns the project’s cover serves as more than just a logo; it represents ZULO’s signature, a reminder that he is entering his final form as an artist.

“These songs are battle cries and war journals,” ZULO explains. “Z is everything I’ve fought through to stand where I am.”

ZULO’s journey is one of constant reinvention. Formerly known as Lil Trix, he made his mark in high school with eight mixtapes, YFM and 5FM chart placements, and even a finalist spot on ShizNiz’s King of the Mixtape competition. Since rebranding, he has steadily carved out a space for himself as a respected voice in South African hip-hop, celebrated for his storytelling, cultural homage, and genre fusion.

Z follows a string of successful singles released in 2024, including “Adawise,” “JOL,” “Garden,” and “Smaak To Love (Lamza).” With this latest EP, ZULO not only proves his place in the rap scene, but also cements his status as a symbol—sharpened, self-defined, and deeply rooted in the truths of South Africa.
