A decade ago, Sun-El Musician graced the stage at Johannesburg’s Fête de la Musique as an up-and-coming act, unknown to many but destined for greatness. On Saturday, June 21, he returns to the same festival as a headline act, closing the circle on a musical journey that’s inspired millions.
Now in its 14th year, Fête de la Musique will once again transform Victoria Yards into a lively hub of sound, culture, and connection—with Sun-El’s performance set to be a major highlight of the day. Entry is completely free, giving fans the rare chance to experience one of South Africa’s biggest music stars live in an intimate, open-air setting.
Joining him on the bill is Bongeziwe Mabandla, another artist whose story is deeply woven into the festival’s legacy. Both artists return as shining examples of what the Fête platform can do—offering early opportunities that grow into international careers.

Started in Johannesburg 14 years ago, Fête de la Musique follows the French tradition of turning public spaces into performance stages, creating a festival where anyone can perform and everyone is welcome. What began as a space for amateur musicians has grown into one of Joburg’s most anticipated cultural celebrations.
“It’s deeply rewarding to see artists like Sun-El Musician evolve from festival newcomer to headline act,” says Dorine Lebreton, Deputy Director of the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS), the festival’s long-time partner. “It’s what Fête is all about—celebrating growth, connection, and creativity.”

2025 Highlights
This year’s edition celebrates 50 years of UNESCO’s International Music Day and 30 years of IFAS in South Africa. The festival’s line-up includes over 20 diverse acts, handpicked from more than 300 applicants by a panel of respected local and international jurors.
In addition to Sun-El and Bongeziwe, fans can expect performances from rising stars like Jabulile Majola, Afro Moment, KHNYSA, and more.
More Than Music
Beyond the performances, Fête de la Musique serves as a platform for skills development through the Live Music Lab. Young professionals in stage management, production, and event coordination will take part behind the scenes, learning from some of the best in the business.
