Thandiswa Mazwai isn’t just a musical icon—she’s a cultural powerhouse. From the moment she stepped onto the scene with her debut album Zabalaza two decades ago, Mazwai has woven stories of heritage, identity, and spirituality into every note, lyric, and rhythm. And now, through her partnership with Castle Milk Stout, she’s on a mission to make sure South Africans don’t forget where they come from.
With Castle Milk Stout’s campaign, “Don’t Let Their Stories Disappear,” Thandiswa is calling on all of us to celebrate the traditions, stories, and rituals passed down by our ancestors. The campaign kicked off alongside Ancestors Day on May 8 and continues through May, is a reminder to connect with our roots and keep the memory of those who came before us alive.
For Mazwai, this campaign is personal. “I lost my mother when I was very young, and a lot of my life has been about understanding that loss and holding on to her memory,” she shares. It’s this deeply emotional connection to the past that fuels her passion for preserving African stories. “Every family has incredible stories. Ordinary lives matter, and we need to pass down these stories so future generations know where they come from,” she says.

As the face of the campaign, Mazwai invites South Africans to share their own ancestral memories—whether it’s a praise song (izithakazelo), a family ritual, or a beloved story. These memories aren’t just for nostalgia; they’re part of building a living archive of African history, one that’s decentralised, accessible, and deeply rooted in community. Social media becomes a digital shrine to ancestral knowledge, with Mazwai leading the charge, urging everyone to speak the names, remember the stories, and make sure they don’t disappear.
And it’s not just talk. Mazwai’s Sankofa tour, which Castle Milk Stout supported in 2024, marked the 20th anniversary of her debut album Zabalaza—a moment to reflect on how far she’s come and how far the African narrative needs to go. For her, music isn’t just about melodies; it’s a way to heal, reflect, and connect with the past while shaping the future.
“I use my work to celebrate African languages, heritage, and knowledge systems,” she says. “By bringing in traditional instruments, I’m bridging the old with the new, creating a future that honours the past.” And it’s this blend of the ancient and the contemporary that makes Mazwai’s message so powerful. She’s not just keeping our stories alive; she’s making them speak to a new generation.
What's your hot take on this story?
Castle Milk Stout’s collaboration with Mazwai is a bold move toward embedding ancestral knowledge into South Africa’s national identity.
“It’s about more than just raising awareness,” says Hetisani Makhubela, Brand Manager for Castle Milk Stout. “It’s about affirming the power and dignity of African culture. Thandiswa is helping us highlight the importance of embracing our heritage.”
For Mazwai, this isn’t just a campaign—it’s a call to action. “As we reflect on Africa Month, we need to remember that pan-Africanism isn’t just about unity across the continent. It’s about remembering where we come from.
“This campaign is about taking that memory seriously,” she says. “We need to speak the names, ask the questions, and most importantly, remember.”
