Former reality TV stars Peet and Mel Viljoen have launched a crowdfunding campaign, asking the public to help pay for Peet’s growing legal fees as he prepares for a major criminal trial in South Africa.
The appeal comes shortly after Peet Viljoen was arrested and deported from the United States. The former attorney, who was struck off the roll years ago, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for about 100 days after he and Mel were allegedly involved in a shoplifting incident at a supermarket.
Mel Viljoen was allowed to leave the U.S. voluntarily, while Peet was deported back to South Africa. Police were waiting for him when he arrived at OR Tambo International Airport, where he was immediately arrested. After his arrival, the Hawks took Viljoen into custody and brought him before the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court.
Prosecutors revealed that he is facing around 400 criminal charges, including fraud, theft, corruption, forgery and uttering. The charges are linked to a 2010 investigation into an alleged multi-million-rand property fraud scheme.
According to the State, several municipal properties owned by the Johannesburg Property Company (JPC) were illegally transferred and sold to buyers, while the City allegedly never received payment for the properties.
