South African content creator Ghost Hlubi has reportedly made R120K in his first month on streaming platform Kick. The figure comes from a Freshmen Magazine post, and I couldn’t find independent confirmation or details on whether it’s before or after the platform’s cut.
The move adds a new chapter to a career built mostly on YouTube. Ghost, whose real name is Khanya Hlubi, rose to prominence through prank videos, and reports say his light-hearted clips began going viral on social media in 2017. One profile says he launched his YouTube channel in October 2019, just before COVID-19 hit, when people stuck at home went looking for online entertainment and his views took off. Other profiles date his YouTube career to the 2020 lockdown, saying he worked within his aunt’s business to buy an iPhone for content creation, and that his channel was monetised in 2021. He became known for videos featuring luxury vehicles such as an Audi R8 and a Rolls-Royce, and for his pranks. He won Most Popular Content Across All Social Media at the 2023 South African Social Media Awards. He has also said he earns around R160K a month from YouTube alone, which he revealed on the LTido Podcast. His YouTube channel has since passed 1.1 million subscribers, according to one report.
He has also moved into music. His releases include the 2022 single “Pop” and collaborations with DOD, “Iskoloto” and “Cold”, followed by “Need You” in 2023.
What's your hot take on this story?
On Kick, he streams as ghosthlubitv, where his channel describes the content as IRL, challenges, reactions, gaming and just chatting, and has about 29,700 followers. If the R120K figure holds, it shows how quickly an established creator can turn a new platform into another income stream.
