Tyler Perry is bringing back one of his most loved movie franchises. Netflix has confirmed that “Why Did I Get Married Again?” will premiere globally on September 9.
The film is the third instalment in the “Why Did I Get Married” series. The first movie came out in 2007, and the second followed in 2010. It’s now been 16 years since fans last saw this group of friends together on screen, so this reunion has been a long time coming. Most of the original cast is returning for this one. Jill Scott, Tasha Smith, Michael Jai White, Richard T. Jones, Lamman Rucker and Sharon Leal are all back in their roles. Tyler Perry, who created the franchise, writes and directs every film in it, is also returning as an actor.
There is one big name missing from the cast list. Janet Jackson who played Patricia in the first two films, is not part of this new movie. In her place, Taraji P. Henson joins the story in a brand new role. Henson has worked with Perry many times before, and she’s described her new character as a “firecracker.”
The story this time takes the group away from their usual settings and drops them into a destination wedding in Lake Como, Italy. Marcus and Angela’s daughter is the one getting married, and the celebration brings the whole friend group back together after years apart. As you’d expect from this franchise, what starts out as a happy occasion soon turns into a much deeper look at the couples’ lives, their marriages, and how their children have grown up to make some of the same choices they did.

Perry has spoken about what drew him back to these characters after so long. He said that returning to the story after all this time felt natural, almost like slipping into something familiar. He also pointed out that both the actors and their characters have lived a lot of life since the first film came out nearly 20 years ago some have gotten married, some have gotten divorced, and some are simply in different places now than they were back then.
Filming for the movie took place in two parts. The Lake Como scenes were shot in Italy toward the end of last year, and the rest of the film was completed early this year at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta. With a release date now locked in, fans won’t have to wait much longer to see how this next chapter plays out. “Why Did I Get Married Again?” arrives on Netflix on September 9.
