Karl Lagerfeld Was A Man Who Loved Chrome Hearts

Everyone remembers Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel. The tweed, the ponytail, the fan, the sunglasses that never came off. But underneath the couture, Karl had a rebellious streak that lived somewhere else entirely in the heavy silver, the crosses, and the biker-gang attitude of Chrome Hearts.

It wasn’t a phase. It was a full-blown love affair that ran for decades, and it’s one of fashion’s most underrated crossovers.

The Uniform Under The Uniform

Chrome Hearts was born in the grit of LA’s biker scene back in 1988, built on chunky sterling silver, baroque crosses, and heavy leather. It was the exact opposite of the polished Parisian houses Karl built his career on — which is probably why he loved it so much.

Karl didn’t just wear the odd piece here and there. The rings, the layered chains, the sterling silver ornaments became part of his personal signature, stacked underneath his own couture creations. It gave his look an edge that Chanel and Fendi alone never could. He wasn’t dressing like a designer wearing his own brand he was dressing like a rocker who happened to also run two fashion houses.

He didn’t keep the admiration quiet either. Karl was known for telling the family behind Chrome Hearts that theirs was the only real brand left, high praise from a man who had access to literally every luxury label on earth.

When The Two Worlds Officially Collided

The love story went past his personal wardrobe. In 2015, Karl and Chrome Hearts joined forces on a limited-edition run of furniture, a collection of chairs that blended his eye for form with their signature rock-and-roll aesthetic. It was a strange, brilliant pairing that made total sense once you saw it: precision design meeting raw, handmade edge.

He also brought Chrome Hearts directly into the Chanel universe, working with the brand on a limited run of custom bags a rare move for a designer who typically kept his houses tightly controlled and rarely opened the door to outside collaborators.

The Story That’s Resurfacing Now

Years after his passing, Karl’s connection to Chrome Hearts is back in the headlines. A New York resale specialist recently surfaced a Chrome Hearts collection valued at around R16 million, believed to be sourced from Karl’s personal estate reportedly linked back to Sébastien Jondeau, his longtime bodyguard and personal assistant. Jondeau’s own auction of Lagerfeld memorabilia earlier this year included Chanel pieces and Chrome Hearts jewellery, which is part of what’s fuelling speculation that this new collection traces back to Karl himself.

Nothing has been officially confirmed by paperwork, but for a designer as private and meticulously curated as Karl, even the rumour of a hidden R 16 567 235 Chrome Hearts stash feels exactly on brand.

Why It Still Matters

Karl Lagerfeld spent his career shaping what luxury fashion looked like on runways in Paris. Off the clock, his personal style told a different story one of silver instead of sequins, and rebellion instead of restraint. Chrome Hearts wasn’t a side interest for Karl. It was the part of his identity that didn’t need an audience, which might be exactly why it still feels so real
