South African football star Relebohile Mofokeng is officially heading to Europe. Orlando Pirates have confirmed that they have reached an agreement with Belgian club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise for the transfer of the talented 21-year-old midfielder.
The highly anticipated move comes after months of speculation and follows a historic campaign for South Africa national football team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Orlando Pirates revealed that the transfer had actually been agreed before the World Cup started. Both clubs decided to keep the deal private so Mofokeng could focus fully on representing South Africa without the pressure and distractions of transfer rumours.
After Bafana Bafana’s 1–0 defeat to Canada in the Round of 32, Mofokeng did not return to Johannesburg with the squad. Instead, he travelled directly from Los Angeles to Brussels to complete the final steps of his move. The transfer is still waiting for Mofokeng to complete his medical tests and finalise his personal contract details. Reports suggest that Royale Union Saint-Gilloise are preparing to offer him a long-term four-year deal.
Mofokeng leaves Orlando Pirates after an outstanding season. He scored 11 goals and provided nine assists in 36 appearances, helping the club secure a domestic treble and earning a nomination for the PSL Footballer of the Season award. Hugo Broos welcomed the move but also warned that European football will bring new challenges. The coach praised Mofokeng’s talent but explained that he will need to improve his physical strength and adapt to the faster, more demanding style of football in Belgium.
