We are still processing the looks from yesterday’s Met Gala. The first Monday in May is known as Met Gala Monday, coinciding with Star Wars Day “May the 4th Be with You”. The Metropolitan Museum of Art had transformed its steps into the world’s most exclusive gallery. For 2026, the Costume Institute presented the theme “Costume Art”, an ambitious theme that stripped away the article of “trends” to examine the raw relationship between the human body and the clothes that inhabit us.
The curator in charge of this year’s theme was Andrew Bolton. His vision for this year was a radical shift from last year. Rather than focusing on a specific era or a designer, the 2026 exhibition explores the theme of “dressed bodies” across the 5000-year history.
The exhibition housed in the brand-new Condé M. Nast Galleries, that pairs nearly 200 historic garments with 200 different works of art, sculptures, paintings, and drawings from the Met’s permanent collection. The goal was not just about the history of clothes but showing the clothing that is covering the body that shapes, distorts and defines our humanity.
Some of the stars invited to the Met really held to the theme. Anok Yai epitomised the “Anatomical Body” theme in a breathtaking collaboration with Mugler, appearing as if her form had been cast in liquid obsidian. The custom creation featured a groundbreaking hyper-metallic finish that fused seamlessly with her amazing skin, effectively transforming her silhouette into a living, breathing sculpture. Her look showcased traditional fabric in favor of sharp, avant-garde lines that extended from her shoulders, mimicking the deliberate fractures found in ancient bronze statues. By stripping away conventional accessories, she and the house of Mugler successfully presented the human frame as the ultimate masterpiece of the evening.

With the assistance of the designers; Janelle Monáe was dressed by Christian Siriano. The pair interpreted the theme through a “Wild Robot” lens. Her gown was a fusion of high-tech circuity and organic moss, suggesting a future where art, nature and technology cannot be distinguished.
Kim Kardashian was dressed by Allen Jones & Whitaker Malem. The two pushed the boundaries of the “Mortal Body” Kim wore a cyborg-style orange chrome breastplate that blurred the line between human and machine. The piece was designed to look like a silver mold of her own torso, reflecting the exhibition’s focus on the “Anatomical Body”.
The 2026 Met Gala was not just an expensive celebrity party but rather a coronation.
