Davis’ journey into music was unexpected. He originally trained as a lawyer, earning degrees from NYU and Harvard Law School, before joining Columbia Records in 1960 as a legal advisor. However, his incredible business instincts and ability to recognise talent quickly pushed him up the ranks. By 1967, he became president of the label. It was during his time at Columbia Records that Davis’ legendary talent for spotting future stars became clear. After witnessing the changing sound of the music scene at the Monterey Pop Festival, he transformed the label’s image and signed some of the biggest names in music, including Janis Joplin, Bruce Springsteen, Carlos Santana, and Billy Joel. His decisions helped shape the future of popular music.
After leaving Columbia Records in 1973 following a controversial exit, Davis refused to slow down. He went on to launch Arista Records in 1974 and later J Records in 2000, continuing to build a legacy of discovering and developing some of the world’s biggest artists. One of his greatest achievements was discovering a young Whitney Houston in 1983. After seeing her perform at a showcase in New York, Davis signed her and played a major role in guiding her career. Houston went on to become one of the most successful and celebrated vocalists in music history.
Davis was also a major supporter of Black artists and helped bring R&B, hip-hop, and contemporary pop music into the global spotlight. Through partnerships with labels like LaFace Records and Bad Boy Records, he helped elevate artists and sounds that would go on to define generations. His career included working with stars such as Alicia Keys, Dionne Warwick, Earth, Wind & Fire, and many more.
