Christopher Nolan is set to bring Homer’s ancient Greek epic to life in his most ambitious project to date, The Odyssey. Scheduled for release on 17 July 2026, the film is described as a “mythic action epic” and holds the distinction of being the first feature film shot entirely with IMAX film cameras. Following his Academy Award-winning success with Oppenheimer, Nolan is shifting from modern history to one of the oldest adventure stories in Western literature.

A Journey Through Myth and Memory

The film follows Odysseus (played by Matt Damon), the king of Ithaca, as he attempts to return home after the Trojan War. What should be a simple voyage becomes a years-long struggle against violent storms and legendary beings, such as the one-eyed Cyclops Polyphemus, the enchanting Sirens, and the nymph Calypso.

While Odysseus fights for survival at sea, the story also focuses on his home in Ithaca. His wife, Penelope (Anne Hathaway), must fend off aggressive suitors seeking to seize the throne, while their son, Telemachus (Tom Holland), searches for his missing father. This dual narrative explores themes of loyalty, pride, identity, and the meaning of home.

A Powerhouse Cast and Creative Team

Nolan has assembled a massive international ensemble. Beyond the lead trio of Damon, Hathaway, and Holland, the cast includes Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron. Many of these actors are frequent Nolan collaborators, which may help ground the film’s fantastical elements in emotional depth.

The production is led by Emma Thomas and Nolan through their company, Syncopy. Key returning crew members from Nolan’s previous films include:

  • Grounded Spectacle

Known for his preference for practical effects and real-world locations, Nolan filmed The Odyssey across multiple countries using actual vessels and landscapes. This approach aims to make the mythological world feel immediate and tangible, avoiding the look of heavily computer-generated fantasy films.

The source material also aligns with Nolan’s interest in flawed protagonists and non-linear storytelling. Just as the original poem uses memories to tell Odysseus’s story, the film is expected to be a complex examination of trauma and memory rather than a standard chronological adventure. Ultimately, beneath the IMAX spectacle and monsters, the film remains a deeply personal story about a family trying to remain united against impossible odds.
