Gugu Gumede is having the kind of year most actresses only dream of. Best known for playing MaMlambo on “Uzalo,” she’s just landed two major new roles, both of which premiered within weeks of each other in June 2026.
It started with Netflix’s “The Polygamist” which premiered on 12 June. In it, Gugu plays Joyce, a social media influencer whose seemingly perfect marriage falls apart once her husband’s cheating comes to light. Just weeks later, she stepped into a brand new role on eTV’s telenovela “eGagasini: Waves of Change” as Phumelela Dube.
On the show, Phumelela is described as smart and ambitious. She’s the wife and business partner of music producer Senzo Dube played by veteran actor Meshack Mavuso, and together they run Umlilo Records. Phumelela becomes the driving force behind signing Truth or Dare, the young music group at the centre of the show’s storyline, pushing their meteoric rise to fame.
“eGagasini: Waves of Change” premiered on 29 June 2026, taking over the 7:30pm weeknight slot from “House of Zwide.” Set against the backdrop of Durban’s vibrant music scene, the show follows three ambitious best friends from Umlazi, Lwandle, Njabulo and Sihle, whose group Truth or Dare becomes an overnight sensation after a video of theirs goes viral. Their dream of fame quickly turns into a nightmare after a tragic yacht accident leaves a young woman dead. Bound together by a pact of silence, the friends have to navigate the pressures of sudden success while hiding a secret that could destroy everything.
The show also stars Nolwazi Tsebesha as Noxolo Dube, Senzo and Phumelela’s privileged daughter, whose world is turned upside down as she gets entangled in her parents’ business. The series is produced by Stained Glass TV, the award-winning production house behind “Durban Gen” and forms part of eTV’s new primetime “Golden Hour” alongside another new drama “The Four of Us.”
