DJ Maphorisa allegedly gets rid of legal team amid assault charges

The sensational DJ and producer, DJ Maphorisa has reportedly gotten rid of his legal team after a disagreement regarding his assault case.

Talking to Sunday World, a source revealed that the Blaqboy Music boss had to let his legal representation go because they were in agreement with the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) proposal for him to attend anger management courses.

Real name Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, Maphorisa does not agree with his legal team to take anger management courses because he feels it will rob him of a chance to prove to the court and the public that he is innocent.

In May, the Randburg Magistrate’s Court granted Maphorisa R4 000 bail for allegedly beating up and strangling his girlfriend and former Generations: The Legacy actress Thuli Phongolo during an argument at her home in Sandton, Johannesburg.

In a police statement, the actress and DJ said Maphorisa became aggressive and punched her on her chest. He also allegedly slapped her across the face. “He held me and took me to the balcony, and grabbed me aggressively by my neck,” the police statement read.

The source also revealed to the publication that this was not the first time that something like that had taken place, as the couple had fought in full view of patrons during one of his gigs the night before. Their argument allegedly ensured after a man-made advances at Thuli and promised to send her R40 000.

Although the actress filed a withdrawal statement the day after Maphorisa was arrested, her plea had not been finalised as the NPA needed time to investigate.

The matter was postponed in July and was escalated to the Director of Public Prosecutions. Maphorisa is set to appear in court soon to find out if the NPA will prosecute him.
