The Showmax Roast of Minnie Dlamini was a jump!

It was a night of glitz, glamour, and a whole lot of roast! The long-awaited recording of ‘The Showmax Roast of Minnie Dlamini at the Laugh Africa Comedy Festival was an event to remember, even if it did run fashionably late. Well…really late, but who is worried about time when you have a pool of celebs to interview?

The star-studded affair, graced by the likes of Yanga Chief, Bontle Modiselle and Priddy Ugly, Luthando ‘LootLove’ Shosha, Zizo Tshwete, and the controversial Rasts among others, kicked off several hours behind schedule. But once the show started, it was a non-stop rollercoaster of laughs and banter.

And in true South African fashion, Rasta was at the occasion to paint Minnie Dlamini’s portrait…or what we hoped would be the perfect portrait.

Comedy powerhouses Tumi Morake and Jason Goliath steered the ship as Roast Masters, and they didn’t escape unscathed either, becoming the targets of some hilarious jabs themselves. It was beautiful to watch.

The panel of roasters, included Robert Marawa, Da Les, Trevor Gumbi, Shahan Ramkissoon, Celeste Ntuli, Penny Lebyane, Siv Ngezi and Lasizwe Dambuza, were roasted to the core about their careers and public mishaps that we thought we had forgiven as a country…*clears throat* Not Lasizwe being compared to the late Michael Jackson! Some jokes were cringe-worthy, like the jabs at Da L.E.S and his legendary all-white parties teased to be linked to the latest Diddy saga, but they all took it in stride and with loads of laughter.

South African rapper Yanga Chief was spotted attending the comedy festival and said he was there to take notes because he considers himself a funny guy.

“I am quite a funny guy myself so I am doing some research. Maybe I’ll be on the panel next year.”

“I am dropping a project next month and i am dropping a single at the end of April:, said Yanga Chief.

Luthando ‘LootLove’ Shosha was also in attendance. She said she was happy to be back in radio following the announcement of her return to the Metro FM airwaves with co-host Tbo Touch.

Despite the laughs, there were moments of seriousness, with Gumbi going off-script to address personal issues and Marawa’s dating history being brought into the spotlight. Marawa had a good roast. he said the only reason the Springboks won the World Championship was because Minnie Dlamini didn’t date anyone on the team.

Minnie Dlamini, the lady of the hour, handled the roast with grace and humour, proving she can take the heat. Some of the jokes thrown her way were quite cringe. In fact, a lot of jokes were made about her having to pay 10k monthly spousal support as a result of her divorce from Quinton Jones. Dlamini was roasted for turning her wedding day into a production.

But through it all, the night was a testament to the vibrant and diverse comedy scene in South Africa. The Roast of Minnie Dlamini will air on Showmax on April 26, so mark your calendars for a night of laughs and entertainment.
