It's that time again, Mzansi! The black and white jerseys are out, the gold and black supporters are ready, and football fans across the country are preparing for one of the biggest clashes on the South African sporting calendar. The Soweto Derby is happening today, Saturday, 31 October, as Orlando Pirates take on their bitter rivals Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium.
With bragging rights, pride and three valuable Betway Premiership points up for grabs, neither side will want to walk away without a victory. Let's be honest, whether you're a Buccaneer or an Amakhosi supporter, nobody wants to deal with the teasing at work or the family braai after a derby loss!
Both Soweto giants head into the highly anticipated encounter following convincing performances in the Carling Knockout. Orlando Pirates secured a 3-0 victory over Milford FC, while Kaizer Chiefs also cruised to a 3-0 win against TS Galaxy, with Wandile Duba stealing the spotlight after scoring a hat-trick.
However, today's encounter is an entirely different ball game. Pirates will be looking to strengthen their position near the top of the league standings, while Chiefs have an opportunity to close the gap on their rivals and make a statement in their league campaign.
Adding even more excitement to the occasion, French football legend Thierry Henry is expected to be in attendance. The former Arsenal and Barcelona striker will get to experience the famous Soweto Derby atmosphere firsthand as part of the PSL's 30-year celebrations.
