The nation is still trying to come to terms with the fact that Nelson Mandela’s favourite singer and legendary local Jazz icon, Thandi Klaasen, has died at age 86.

Following the announcement of the devastating news, messages of condolences flooded in from all corners of communication.

Minister Nathi Mthethwa took to twitter to share his condolences to the Jazz icon’s family and close friends.

“We are saddened to learn that Jazz Legend Thandi Klaasen has passed on. Our thoughts are with her daughter Lorraine, her loved ones, & fans.

He added; “uMama Thandi Klaasen will be remembered for her indomitable spirit, who succeeded against all odds….

“…and her silky smooth voice which serenaded audiences the world over. How much richer we are having heard her sing.

“How much she touched our spirits and made us complete beings in a world in which things were falling apart.”

News outlets reported earlier this week that Thandi Klaasen was fighting an uncertain battle with pancreatic cancer; unfortunately, death came knocking earlier than expected.

Addressing the nation on Thandi’s death, President Jacob Zuma says this serves as a huge loss to the country.

“We have lost one of the leading pioneers of South African jazz music and promoters of the country’s cosmopolitan culture. She was a role model to many of our young and upcoming musicians and her legacy will live on for generations to come,” he said in a statement on Sunday.

“Her passing is a tragic loss to the nation. Ms Klaassen contributed to the country not only as a musician but also a social and political activist who was always outspoken about socio-economic issues in the country.”
