After eight years in the South African streaming market, Showmax is gearing up for its most significant year yet, set to relaunch in February 2024 with a fresh look, a new app, and a completely revamped product suite. The relaunch follows a strategic partnership with international media heavyweight Comcast’s NBCUniversal and Sky.
The upcoming Showmax will introduce three plans: Showmax Entertainment, Showmax Entertainment Mobile, and the innovative Showmax Premier League. Developed in collaboration with SuperSport and tailored for mobile users, Showmax Premier League marks Africa’s first standalone Premier League mobile streaming service, providing coverage for every match in sub-Saharan Africa.
Showmax recently unveiled a refreshed logo and brand identity ahead of the relaunch, showcasing a powerful new technology platform, a bold brand spirit, and an unparalleled content slate. The move to the global Peacock streaming platform positions Showmax for rapid scalability, leveraging Peacock’s success in sports streaming, such as live-streaming the Super Bowl to over six million users simultaneously.
Known for its trend-setting Showmax Originals, the streaming service will expand its content slate across the continent, including the debut of its first 2D animation, “Twende,” and the return of popular series like “Adulting,” “Kwa Mam’Mkhize,” and “Wura.” Other upcoming releases include true-crime series “Convict Conman,” murder mystery series “Trompoppie,” Nigerian legal drama “Agu,” and the first Nigerian Original feature film, “School Run.”
Through its partnership with Comcast, Showmax secures a steady supply of hit international content from Universal Pictures, NBC, Peacock, Sky, DreamWorks Animation, and Telemundo. Viewers can anticipate a substantial increase in international titles, with December’s lineup featuring blockbuster films like “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and “Fast X.”
Showmax has recently garnered recognition as one of the RoW40 (40 Trailblazing Companies that are beating the West) by the global non-profit Rest of World and received the title of ‘The Most Innovative On-demand Video Streaming Platform’ at Nigeria’s 2023 BrandCom Awards. Showmax CEO Marc Jury expresses confidence in the platform’s trajectory, stating, “Streaming in Africa is about to take off, and we’re ready to change the game.”
