While battling a rare neurological disorder, Canadian mega pop icon Celine Dion shared her first interview since disclosing the diagnosis that she’s coping well but taking life “one day at a time.”
Dion, 56, revealed in December 2022 that she had been diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome, a condition causing stiff muscles in the torso, arms, and legs, often triggered by noise or emotional stress.
In an interview for Vogue France’s May cover story, she mentioned, “I am doing well,” but acknowledged the ongoing challenges of her condition, requiring intensive physical, vocal, and athletic therapy five days a week.
While there is no cure for Stiff Person Syndrome, Dion remains hopeful for a medical breakthrough, saying, “I hope that we’ll find a miracle, a way to cure it with scientific research, but for now I have to learn to live with it.”
Dion’s battle with the condition led her to cancel numerous shows scheduled for 2023 and 2024, explaining her physical limitations. When asked about her return to the stage, Dion demonstrated uncertainty, saying, “I don’t know… My body will tell me.”
Despite her health struggles, Dion has remained active, making a surprise appearance at the Grammy Awards in February and announcing a documentary about her condition to raise awareness.
The “Courage World Tour,” which began in 2019, was stopped due to the Covid-19 pandemic after 52 shows.
Dion’s resilience and dedication to her fans continue to inspire, showcasing her strength and determination in the face of adversity.
