Thandiswa Mazwai keeps giving and giving. From her stunning Tiny Desk Concert to celebrating the 20th anniversary of her iconic album Zabalaza, she’s been making serious heat in the music scene. Now, she’s preparing for the release of her new album Sankofa on May 10, and if her latest single “Kulungile” is anything to go by, it’s going to be a beautiful album.
“Kulungile,” which means “it is well” in isiXhosa, is a masterpiece that showcases Mazwai’s musical abilities. With its serene vibes and traditional instruments, the song is a testament to Mazwai’s deep connection to her culture and roots. Featuring the incredible Nduduzo Makhathini, “Kulungile” is just a taste of what’s to come from Sankofa.
Speaking about the album, Mazwai says, “Sankofa… means to go back and fetch what’s left behind — what is important, what honours you, and what needs healing.” The album is all about healing and honouring the child within us, addressing traumas like rejection, abandonment, and sexual violence.
To celebrate the release of Sankofa, Mazwai will be performing at Carnival City, Johannesburg on May 11. This concert is not to be missed, so grab your tickets now!
