South African DJ Black Coffee Scoops Grammy Nomination

South African DJ Black Coffee says he has “no words” after being nominated last night for a 2022 Grammy award.
Black Coffee was nominated in the Best Dance/Electronic Album category. His latest album – Subconsciously – will compete for the most prestigious award in the music world, against albums from Ten City, Sylvan Esso, Marshmello, Major Lazer and Illenium.

Black Coffee tweeted “Wow” when he first heard the news early Tuesday evening. Later in the night, he took to Twitter again to say: “I have no words.” He added a love heart and South African flag emojis and hashtagged #subconsciously.

Black Coffee is already internationally renowned with multiple awards, tours and collaborations with the likes of Usher, DJ David Guetta (video below) and others. He’s also appeared in huge posters in New York’s famous Times Square.

Congratulations flooded in from proud South Africans who say they’re certain he’ll be bringing it home. To one who posted a photo of Black Coffee before he became an international star and said “Who would have thought? Never give up on your dreams, black child”, Black Coffee agreed and said: “Yesterday’s price is not today’s price.”

Another fan said: “At this point all we can do is Stan. We no longer deserve you. All the best.”

Onarip Agency said: “Congratulations KING Coffee on your Grammy nomination.” Red Pill tweeted: “Let me just say, even the Grammy’s are only the beginning for Black Coffee. Higher highs sir, we’re aiming for higher highs.” “Means I be proud” said others. Bonang Matheba tweeted: “Haaaahaaaa!! Congratulations.”

Joburg resident Tebego Twala reposted a tweet from 2012 in which he’d said “Prayer… please God help the super talented, musical genius the Real Black Coffee to win a Grammy Award!!!… Amen!!!” He said last night: “Man it’s been a long time coming… #ProudlySouthAfrican #onemanband #godsveryown, a global super star from South Africa…”

In September, Black Coffee tweeted: “God, if I’m not where I need to be, please align me with your will and lead me there.” Seems he’s been well aligned!

Other Grammy Award nominees included Justin Bieber, H.E.R, Billie Eilish, Doja Cat, Olivia Rodrigo – who was nominated in all four top categories (Record, Album, Song and Best New Artist of the Year), and soul artist John Batiste who led with 11 nominations.

The Grammy Awards will take place on 31 January 2022.
