Meet Oscar Mawuli, a Ghanaian artist whose work raises awareness about breast cancer

Oscar Mawuli is a 23-year-old Ghanaian digital artist, painter, body artist, and Youtuber.

Speaking to IOL, Mawuli said, his latest installation is an artistic expression that raises awareness about breast cancer by illustrating how breast health is important in nursing children as well as during sex.

Mawuli is the founder of Accra-based Yonga Arts.

“I like to explore environments that encourage creative expression.”

In his most recent work, he depicts a woman, elegantly body-painted and dressed as a superhero, ready to fight for breast cancer awareness.

Mawuli describes this piece as resembling a superhero ready to take on one of Africa’s most silent killers.

“In one of the pieces, the lady can be seen levitating with a rope attached to her breast, which is connected to the mouth of the male model kneeling before her.
“This is my way of expressing how powerful female breasts are, hence it’s important to keep it healthy and go for regular check ups,“ he said.

Mawuli claims that art has always been a part of his life since he was a child.

Mawuli is not afraid to address issues such as colonialism, Black Lives Matter, and human rights.

He has used his artwork to investigate pre-colonial culture, but he also addresses decolonized practises in contemporary culture, the essence of black body identity, and seeks to elicit probing questions about empowerment.

Mawuli attended Senajoy Preparatory School in Accra before moving on to Mawuli School in the Volta region to study Visual Arts.

In Ghana, he is currently studying commercial arts in painting at Takoradi Technical University.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, with 1.7 million women diagnosed each year, according to CANSA.
