Date night on a low budget? Try out these romantic ideas at home

Who said date nights have to be expensive when you can get creative at home and spice things up in your space on a low budget? With all the Covid-19 restrictions, going out is not so easy for everyone and most people would rather be all cosy at home.

Whether you are single trying to find yourself the perfect match, or in a relationship wanting to spice things up between you and your significant other, you should try out these ideas at home for your date night:

    1. Have a baking party

For those of us with a serious sweet tooth, baking together has a double benefit: It engages the two of you in an activity you probably don’t do that often, and you get to enjoy something delicious afterward. Make an especially decadent dessert when you’re feeling ambitious, or simply break out a boxed mix if you’re short on time — or baking skills.

    1. DIY a personalized pizza

Step away from the takeout menu and put down that phone: Making your own pizza is both a fun activity and a delicious at-home dinner date. If you’re feeling ambitious, make your own dough, or pick up a pre-made one from your local grocery store. Top it with all of your favourite ingredients or make two personal-sized pies if your tastes are totally different.

    1. Hold an at-home beer or wine tasting

When you can’t get to a brewery, winery, or distillery, hold a tasting session at home. Pick up a few bottles you’ve wanted to try, portion them out into little glasses, and compare and contrast the flavours. To up the education factor, you can even print out information about each one to share as you sip. Read the history of what you’ll be tasting, where it came from, interesting facts about the origin and so on. We have no shortage of good options in South Africa.

    1. Have your own film fest

We all have a lot of shows on our to-watch list these days but make your TV time feel more special by branching outside your usual Netflix queue. Cue up some of your childhood favourites, to share a piece of each other’s history. Or dive into some classic rom-coms, to get yourselves in the mood for the, ahem, after-party.

    1. Cook a nice dinner at home

Get rid of all worries about getting a reservation, long waits for a table, and possibly yelling over restaurant chatter by cooking a gourmet dinner at home. Light some candles, turn on some mood music, try your hand at a fancy new dish, and set the kids up with a movie. For extra oomph, put on your date night duds or try dining in the nude to really spice things up. You’ll find yourself thinking, “We should come here more often!”
