Kaizer Chiefs show faith in Khama Billiat, extend his stay

Kaizer Chiefs have officially confirmed the departure of veteran defender Erick Mathoho but it seems they will hold on to Khama Billiat.

Despite not showing his best qualities since joining Chiefs as a free agent after his shocking departure from Mamelodi Sundowns in 2018, it seems the management has faith in him.

The latest information circulating in the local media space is that the Zimbabwean attacker has been handed a new contract by Amakhosi.

It is now reported that Billiat has already been given a one-year contract extension, but the Soweto giants are yet to confirm the news.

Sources close to the player and Chiefs management revealed that he will stay at the club as his contract was set to expire at the end of June 2023.

“The board seems willing to take a risk on a man who’s been injured for most of the campaign and not really produced his best when fit. They do say form is temporary and class is permanent,” reports Soccer Laduma.

Meanwhile, a local media outlet reports that Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane has been given an ultimatum by the club’s hierarchy.

The South African reports that ‘Mangethe’ will remain in charge of the Naturena-based club for another season, but he will need to have a far better season with the Soweto giants if he is to stay.

“Part of the conditions handed to the 49-year-old, according to the insider, would be that the club is expected to rope in a senior figure of Zwane’s choice to assist him in the technical duties at the club,” reports the website.

While it was also speculated that Chiefs are looking to bring Al Ahli Saudi coach Pitso Mosimane, ‘Jingles’ has since confirmed that there is no contact from the Glamour Boys.

Moreover, Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi’s name has also been linked with the club but he is staying at Chloorkop as his contract expires in June 2024.

Looking at the previous season, Chiefs finished fifth on the DStv Premiership log table and Zwane is expected to hit the ground running next season.
