Kaizer Chiefs Mourns the Untimely Death of Player Luke Fleurs

Kaizer Chiefs paid a touching tribute to their defender Luke Fleurs, who tragically lost his life in a hijacking incident in Honeydew last night. The news of the 24-year-old’s passing has led to an outpouring of tributes for the promising player.

Chiefs shared a black and white photo of Fleurs along with heartfelt words about the young talent. “It is with great sadness that we announce that Kaizer Chiefs player, Luke Fleurs, tragically lost his life last night during a hijacking incident in Johannesburg,” the club expressed on X, formerly Twitter.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time. The SAPS are handling the matter, and further details will be communicated in due course. May his dear soul rest in peace.”

Standing at 1.82 meters tall, Fleurs began his senior career at Ubuntu Cape Town after progressing through the club’s junior ranks. Joining Ubuntu’s academy at just 13 years old in 2013, he made his debut in the National First Division at 17.

Fleurs moved to SuperSport United in 2018, where he made over 60 appearances before signing with Kaizer Chiefs on a two-year deal in October of the previous year. Despite not having played for the team yet, Fleurs was a promising talent and had been called up to the Bafana Bafana squad in 2021 and 2022, though he had not made his debut for the national team.

Tributes came pouring in on X:

“The incident happened in Florida, an area that is very prevalent for hijackings and violent crime. And still with all this happening, we have fellow citizens who are against cops taking a tough stance against such criminals. Who’ll speak for Luke’s life now? Any lawyer or NGO?”, said @OhFlipItsVuyo

“This is very sad, may the family be comforted n MHSRIP another young man loosing his life to hijacking”, said @NdlovuVincentia

“Commiserations to his family, friends and colleagues May his soul rest in perfect peace”, said @Ronewa_Mathephe
