The 7th Chevy Feather awards were held at Johannesburg City hall on 12 November this year and as usual, it was an event full of glamour, drama and style.

However these awards which have become known as an event where celebrities who are allies of the LGBTI community are acknowledged for their work and contribution.

This year we saw an introduction of an activism aspect to this auspicious even in the form of The Feather of the Year award being given to one of seven Africa LGBTI activists from different countries. This award was won by Titica, a transgender artist from Angola who performs a local form of rap-techno music called "kuduro”.

This is a milestone in the awards which a lot of people have been criticizing for not recognizing the members of the LGBTI community. This year’s nominees for Role model of the year were Steve Letsike of Access Chapter 2, Dr Ntlotleng Mabena, a sexologist. With a focus on women’s health and OUT LGBT Wellbeing a first across the board in this category and the award was won by Steve Letsike.

This goes on to show that these awards are not for fun and frivolity, but they do hold substance as in many categories LGBTI people were nominated and won awards including Media of the year which went to Mamba Online which had another queer contender in the form of Hola Africa. And the biggest win for the LGBTI community was former Banyana Banyana captain Portia Modise.
