Hlompho Kekana scores himself a Puskas Award nomination

The captain and midfielder for Mamelodi Sundowns, Hlompho Kekana has scored himself a nomination for the prestigious 2020 FIFA Puskas Award.

FIFA recently announced the nominees for the 2020 edition of The Best FIFA Football Awards ceremony, with Kekana featuring among the candidates for the Puskas Award following his strike against Cape Town City on 20 August 2019.

35-year-old football star has been nominated alongside 10 other players for this year’s prize, including former FC Barcelona striker Luis Suarez, ex-France international Andre-Pierre Gignac and Tottenham Hotspur forward Heung-min Son.

“The winner of the FIFA Puskas Award will be selected by an international jury comprising a panel of FIFA Legends and by the fans from all over the world registered on FIFA.com,” an official statement read. “Each of the two groups of voters within the jury has the same electoral weight.”

This is not the first time Kekana has been nominated for the coveted award as he was nominated for the 2016 edition alongside Lionel Messi and Neymar, although he ultimately lost out to Malaysian striker Mohd Faiz Subri on that occasion.

The finalists for this year’s prize will be announced on 11 December 2020, with the winners to be crowned six days later at The Best FIFA Football Awards ceremony. Voting has been made open to the public on FIFA.com until 9 December 2020.
