Another Barcelona icon is leaving the club at the end of the current season and that is none other than defender Jordi Alba.
The Spanish La Liga champions confirmed the news on Wednesday, announcing his immediate departure.
The 34-year-old arrived at Barca more than a decade ago and the club has thanked him for his loyal service.
“Barcelona and Alba have reached an agreement to release the player from the contract that he had until the end of the 2023-24 season,” said Barcelona in a statement.
Managed by Xavi Hernandez, Barcelona publicly expressed its gratitude to Alba for his professionalism, commitment, dedication and for always being positive. The club is impressed with everything that he contributed to the Barcelona family.
While it remains unclear what is his next destination, Alba is now receiving tributes from former teammates such as Lionel Messi.
“You were more than a friend, a true partner on the pitch. And how nice it is to also be able to enjoy with you and how well we get along personally,” said Messi.
“You already know I always wish you the best and also your family, may your new stage continue to bring you success and joy. Thanks for everything, Jordi. A Big Hug!.”
Looking at his statistics this season, the seasoned campaigner failed to command a regular spot as he lost his place in the team to teenager Alejandro Balde.
Furthermore, he had a year remaining on his current deal and it is expected to expire in 2024, but Spanish reports indicate that he will waive a significant percentage of the money due to help the club amid financial struggles.
His shocking departure comes after that of skipper and legend Sergio Busquets, who announced his move away from the club in the past few weeks.
Judging his overall statistics, Alba has featured in over 450 times for Barcelona, netting 27 goals while also chipping in with 91 assists.
