Black tax; a sign of gratitude, or just a heavy burden upon you?

This one goes out to everyone out there who cannot focus on building their own lives without having that reminder of what someone did for them when they were young, those who have jobs and are expected by family to contribute financially because they raised them and paid for their education.

Although some do not find black tax to be a burden saying it’s a sign of gratitude and that they’re proud to carry out, you need to know that you are not obliged to pay anyone for raising you or paying for your education when you were young.

Firstly, you did not choose to be born, and although it may sound harsh, you did not ask anybody to pay for any of your childhood finances, so why should they ask you to pay black tax?

According to our content editor, black tax is another form of abuse since victims find themselves emotionally trapped to give out whatever they earn, or face disownment by their families.

One victim, Nkosazane Mahlubi shared her story on how black tax put her life on hold while other people’s lives went forward.

‘’I remember the first day I got my salary, my family cooked for me, washed and ironed for me, then my mother started telling stories of how she used to struggle with me when I was young. Before I knew it, every month they expected money from me, when I bought myself something, people became funny towards me in the house. That’s when I realized that I do not owe anyone anything, either they accept what I offer them, or they can all go to h*ll!’’

Another victim, Sipho Sheza says that the situation can also escalate to worse scenarios where you find yourself working for them instead of you.

‘’I used to live at home because my previous job couldn’t afford me a room outside, but when I got another, I moved out because I needed privacy with my girlfriend. Little did I know I was opening up a can of worms because today, my family is saying I will lose my job because I send them peanuts every month while I enjoy my money with my girlfriend. They say she used muthi on me, that’s why I give them little money. I do not know what they want from me, I sometimes sacrifice my lunch money for people who earn more than me, but still, people are not satisfied. BLACK TAX MUST FALL MAAN!’’

We understand that one should thank their parents every now and then, but that should be done according your own will, not theirs. We would like to hear your comments on what you think about Black tax. Is it a sign of gratitude, or just an unnecessary burden upon you?
