It’s Friday and as usual, most of us are planning to hit the road and get sloshed for the weekend. However, it would be wise to carry a few warm clothes with you because a cold front is expected to hit the Western Cape and Gauteng during the weekend.
The South African Weather Service says that Gauteng residents will feel the cold weather from Sunday.
Forecaster Wayne Venter explains: “Gauteng will definitely feel a drop in temperature. On Sunday, we will see the wind coming through and will still have mild conditions in Gauteng.”
The weather service says that rain and showers are possible over the south-western parts of the Western Cape from Saturday afternoon, which is expected to spread to the remainder of the Western Cape and the western and southern parts of the Northern Cape on Sunday.
“Rain and showers will be expected over the Eastern Cape by Sunday afternoon. Significant rainfall is expected over the south-western parts of the Western Cape during Sunday morning which may result in localised flooding in places in the Cape Metropole, Overberg and Cape Wineland Districts,” the weather service says in a statement.
Residents have been told to brace for “very cold maximum temperatures” across the Western Cape and Northern Cape on Sunday, with a general decrease in temperatures expected across the rest of the country.
The weather service has urged motorists and pedestrians to practice caution, saying mountain passes may be closed over the Western Cape and Eastern Cape, leading to traffic disruptions.
It has also warned the public about hoax messages doing the rounds on social media, specifically WhatsApp. It’s urged the public to consult the official sites of the weather service.
