The atmosphere in Ngangeliziwe (Mthatha) was filled with excitement as globetrotting house maestro, DJ Black Coffee paid a visit to his old school.
Speaking of paying, Black Coffee, whose real name is Nathi Maphumulo, visited Zimele High yesterday and paid R200000 to have the school’s computer room renovated. Maphumulo was a pupil there in the late 1980s, when it was a junior secondary school.
He matriculated from Nozuko High School, also near Mthatha.
This philanthropic act came after former principal Vuyelwa Hady reached out to Maphumulo for help with their computer room.
Speaking to a crowd of aspiring musicians, doctors, teachers etc, the local DJ said a mouthful about chasing their dreams and perseverance.
DJ Black Coffee visited the school with his mother, Sindiswa Dandala.
Last year Maphumulo made history by being the first South African to win a Black Entertainment Television (BET) Award in Los Angeles.
The school’s principal, Sibulelo Mjali, expressed his gratitude for the kind act Maphumulo executed all in the name of giving back and empowering young minds. Maphumulo’s mother said she prayed her son would stay humble, we guess her prayers were answered!
