Sundowns lifts AFI trophy, pocketing R74m

Mamelodi Sundowns have cemented their names as the champions in Africa after they beat Wydad Casablanca 2-0 to win 3-2 in aggregate at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Sunday at the Africa Football League (AFL).

By leading Mamelodi Sundowns to this historic victory, coach Rulani Mokwena has significantly elevated his reputation as one of Africa’s most promising young managers.

The tournament’s R74 million top prize and potential to eventually rival the prestige of the CAF Champions League represents a major triumph for the ambitious Sundowns. It earned the club their second continental trophy after the 2016 Champions League.

Mokwena has also eliminated fears from earlier this year when Wydad knocked Sundowns out of the Champions League semifinals. Sundowns finally overcame the frequent barrier to their continental aspirations.

With Sundowns harboring global ambitions, Mokwena and his squad will be prime targets in the 2022-24 Champions League after winning the AFL. But for now, the young coach’s stock has risen tremendously for conquering Africa’s new club competition.

His tactical acumen and leadership will be in the spotlight going forward. This breakthrough trophy cements Mokwena as one of the continent’s sharpest rising managerial talents.
